Aramaic, an ancient Semitic language, originated in the Middle East over 4000 years ago. It played an important role in shaping world history and was the first world language for more than 1500 years. It was the language of public life, trade, education and administration for ancient kingdoms and empires. Aramaic was spoken by Jesus and His disciples—and currently it is still spoken. Today, Aramaic is endangered, with only a few large groups of speakers remaining.
